 Naphtali Daggett
DAGGETT, Naphtali, clergyman, born in Attic-borough, Massachusetts, 8 September 1727; died in New Haven, Connecticut, 25 November 1780.
He was graduated at Yale in 1748, studied theology, was ordained pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Smithtown, L. I., in 1751, and in 1756 became professor of divinity at Yale, which post he retained until his death.
When the British attacked New Haven in July 1779, Dr. Daggett took part in the defense with a shot-gun, but was taken prisoner, and compelled by the enemy to act as a guide, and repeatedly pricked with bayonets until his strength failed, and he never fully recovered.

Naphtali Daggett (September 8, 1727 - November 25, 1780) graduated from (English philanthropist who made contributions to a college in Connecticut that was renamed in his honor (1649-1721)) Yale in 1748 and became pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Smithtown, Long Island in 1751.
He became the second president of Yale pro tempore on the resignation of its first president, (Click link for more info and facts about Thomas Clap) Thomas Clap, in 1776, and served in that position until 1777.

Daggett was born in New Haven, Connecticut, July 1st, A.D. He was descended from a long line of illustrious ancestors.
His son, Henry Daggett, father of Stephen Daggett was a Lieutenant and Brevet Capt.in the Revolutionary army, and served his country with distinction until the close of the war.
Daggett was truly a man of peace and although he avoided political strife, he was a man of influence in society, and actively engaged in every public enterprise calculated to benefit his country.

Benjamin Gale, son-in-law of Jared Eliot, a Corporation member, had published a pamphlet arguing for discontinuation of the colonial grant to the college, and no grant was given in 1755.
Clap set out to raise an endowment for a professorship of divinity, and Naphtali Dagget was appointed the Livingstonian Professor of Divinity on March 4 1756.
Noyes offered to share his pulpit with the new professor, agreeing to subscribe to the Assembly's Catechism and the Savoy Confession of Faith, and the students returned to his First Church for worship.

Clap also managed the establishment of Yale's first chair, the Livingston Professorship of Divinity, and in 1755 appointed to that office the Reverend Naphtali Daggett, B.A. who would succeed him when he was finally driven from office by student rebelliousness and lack of public support.
Through the persistent post-Stamp-Act restlessness and the outbreak of the Revolution, Daggett then served 11 years pro tempore (1766-77) "would you have it pro aeternitate?" he asked.
Early in the Revolution, the Trustees turned to the Reverend Ezra Stiles (I778-95), a moderate, ceremonious individual with a questing and open mind, a scholar of almost universal curiosity and learning.
