  Napier & Son
Napier & Son were one of the most important English aircraft engine manufacturers in the early to mid 20th Century.
Their post-World War I Lion was the most powerful engine in the world for some time in the 1920s and into the 1930s, and their Sabre design of the early 1940s holds the title for the most powerful piston aircraft engine to this day, delivering 3,500 horsepower in its later versions.
During the war Napier were asked by the Royal Navy to supply a Diesel for use in their patrol boats, but the Culverin's 720hp was not nearly enough for their needs.

Considered one of the most complex engine designs of its day, the Deltic was nevertheless very reliable, and served for many years after the war as a locomotive powerplant (in British Rail's Class 55) in addition to the PT boats, minesweepers and other small naval vessels for which it was designed.

Napier quickly started work on newer designs, including the 16-cylinder, 1,000 hp, Cub, used in the Blackburn Cubaroo single-engined bomber, and the later 16-cylinder Rapier and 24-cylinder Dagger, both air-cooled H-block designs.
Napier developed a marine engine from the Lion aero engine, the petrol-driven Sea Lion, which could deliver 500 hp and were used in the "Whaleback" Air Sea Rescue Launches.

Napier was, however, well aware that the General Electric Company of America had developed heat-resistant steels that enabled turbo-superchargers to be in-stalled in operational aircraft such as the P-38 Lightning, P-47 Thunderbolt and B-29 Superfortress, and that other firms, notably Junkers, had steadily improved the aircraft diesel.
The compressor and turbine assemblies of the Napier E. 125 (Nm.3 Nomad 1) were tested during 1948 and in October 1949 the prototype engine was run as a complete unit.
The use of SX973 and the development of the Avro 717 was abandoned and it was proposed that a Lincoln or Shackleton should be used with Nomads installed in the outer nacelles.

Before the war Napier had been working on aviation diesel designs (licensed versions of the Junkers Jumo 204) and the Admiralty felt these would be a reasonable starting point for the larger design they required.
The original Napier Culverin was an opposed piston design.
Napier solved this problem by gearing the crankshafts so that one of them rotated in the opposite direction to the other two.

However Napier had been working on various aviation diesel designs, licensed versions of the Junkers Jumo 204, prior to the start of the war.
The original Napier Culverin was an opposed piston design, meaning that instead of each cylinder having a single piston and being closed at one end with a cylinder head, the elongated cylinder would contain two opposing pistons driving in opposite directions toward the middle.
Napier realised that this problem could be solved by gearing the crankshafts such that one of them rotated in the opposite direction to the other two.

The Admiralty asked Napier and Sons, who had been working on copies of a German fast-revving diesel before the war, to come up with a design.

Napier had included some interesting innovations such as oil cooled pistons that helped avoid the overheating problem associated with two-stroke diesels.

Napier in the UK built a whole series of opposed piston diesel engines in the 1950/60s called the Deltic - these were even more unusual in that they had 3 cylinders laid out in triangle (hence "Deltic") with 3 crankshafts and 6 pistons.

Hitherto in the Royal Navy, such boats had been driven by gasoline engines but this fuel is obviously highly flammable and made them very vulnerable to hostile fire, putting them at a disadvantage compared to their German opponents, the diesel-powered E-boats.
This led to a fairly "flat" engine that was originally intended to be buried in the wings of large aircraft.
Hardly surprising, really, considering Napier was best known for its aero-engines, equipping such planes as the Hawker Typhoon.

After the war a completely new and compact concept of this idea using a triangular opposed piston layout with the three banks of cylinders driving three crankshafts set as an inverted Delta using a unique phasing gear drive train with Quill shafts were designed to absorb cylinder vibration.
