  Napier Nomad
The Nomad used a turbine to recover power from the exhaust of the otherwise conventional Diesel engine, resulting in a specific fuel consumption that remains unmatched today, 50 years later.
Prior to World War II Napier had licensed the Junkers Jumo 204[?] Diesel design to set up production in the UK as the Napier Culverin[?], however the start of the war made the Sabre all-important and work on the Culverin was stopped.
While the Nomad 2 was undergoing testing, a prototype Avro Shackleton[?] was lent to Napier as a testbed.

During the war (1944) Napier were asked by the Royal Navy to supply a diesel engine for use in their patrol boats, but the Culverin's 720 hp (537 kW) was not nearly enough for their needs.

 Napier
Napier engines were designed and built by D. Napier & Son, Limited of London, Acton, and Liverpool, UK.
The Napier Nomad compound engine described below was a truly remarkable attempt to provide the 1950s with a highly-economical, efficient aircraft engine for long-range operations.
The original version of the basic engine, the Nomad 1, was a twelve-cylinder, turbocharged, two-stroke, direct fuel-injection, compression-ignition (diesel) engine that was geared by helical spur reduction to drive the rear blade row (in tractor configuration) of a contra-rotating (C-R) propeller.

 ROADandTRACK.com -- Technical Correspondence - Technical Correspondence — June 2002 (6/2002)
In response to the April 2002 Technical Correspondence column regarding the Wright Turbo-Compound engine, there was one other turbo-compounded engine, though it never saw large-scale production: the Napier Nomad.
It was a 12-cylinder boxer 2-stroke diesel, that, in its first in-carnation, employed both centrifugal and axial superchargers, the aforementioned turbo-compounding, an afterburner and a nozzle on the exhaust to extract thrust.
After much simplification, Napier abandoned the Nomad in favor of gas turbines.

In general, though, the lower power-to-weight ratio of diesels, particularly compared to kerosene-powered turboprop engines, has precluded their use in this application.
