At the siege and the battle of Salamanca, in the retreat from Burgos, Shaw, still a subaltern, distinguished himself again and again, but he had to return to England at the end of the year, broken in health.
During the occupation of France by the allied army Shaw was commandant of Calais, and on his return to England was employed as a staff officer in the North.

Shaw was born in Birmingham and studied at Cambridge, where he worked at the Cavendish Laboratory for experimental physics 1877-1900.
Shaw pioneered the study of the upper atmosphere by using instruments carried by kites and high-altitude balloons.

Sir Napier Shaw (March 4, 1854 - March 23, 1945), British meteorologist.
He introduced the air pressure unit millibar, as well as the tephigram, a diagram of temperature changes.
Shaw also studied air pollution, publishing his book The Smoke Problem of Great Cities in 1925.
