John Napier or Neper, nicknamed Marvellous Merchiston (1550–April 4, 1617) was a Scottish mathematician, physicist, astronomer/astrologer and eighth Laird of Merchiston.
Napier is relatively little-known outside mathematical and engineering circles, where he made what is undoubtedly a key advance in the use of mathematics.
Napier used some of his mathematical talents for theology, as he used the Book of Revelation to predict the Apocalypse.

Napier is best known for his invention of logarithms and for formulas used in solving spherical triangles.
Napier was born in the Tower of Merchiston, now at the center of Napier University’s Merchiston campus, in 1550.
Napier died in April 1617 and was buried at St. Cuthbert’s Church in Edinburgh.

I attended the conference in part to present a workshop on the work of the Hearing the Student Voice project which Napier is leading (in collaboration with Leeds Met University, UCE, Birmingham and the University of Westminster).
Keynote speakers are Professor Steve Fuller, Professor of Sociology, University of Warwick, and Sally Johnstone, executive director of WCET, a co-operative advancing effective use of technology in HE, based in Boulder, Colorado.
