Napoleon Dynamite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Napoleon lives with his 32-year-old geekish brother Kip and their grandmother, who sends the "has-been" Uncle Rico, an ex-high school quarterback with shattered dreams of stardom on the football field, to look after them when she is hospitalized following an all-terrain vehicle accident.
Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder), the film's protagonist, is a stereotypical geek and compulsive liar who enjoys mundane diversions such as drawing creatures (such as ligers), drinking milk, eating tater tots, and playing with nunchaku and tetherball.
Napoleon's "pretty much" favorite animal, the liger, is actually a real animal, and exists in zoos as a result of mating a male lion with a female tiger.

Napoleon Dynamite is about a really big nerd and all the weird people around him.

 Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
Napoleon Dynamite was one of those Sundance premieres that found a distributor, followed that with art-house success, but then did what few festival movies ever do: it jumped to the multiplexes and spawned a phenomenon, broadly appealing to children, teens, and grown-ups who blushingly recalled their own high school years.
When Napoleon Dynamite first appeared at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, and then later when it came out in theaters, the teen comedy polarized critics, with many of the detractors accusing co-writer/director Jared Hess of laughing at his geeky hero, Napoleon (Jon Heder), and his equally socially inept friends and family.
Napoleon also bears the intrusion into his life of his obnoxious Uncle Rico (Jon Gries), inches toward romance with his shy classmate Deb (Tina Majorino), and helps his new pal Pedro (Efren Ramirez) in his quest to become class president.

So deadpan a film is Napoleon Dynamite, the story and the name of a gangly high school misfit in Preston, Idaho, that I can't say whether it was intended as a character study or a comedy.
At the end of Napoleon Dynamite, you're glad the geeks have their day (even Kip's chat-mate turns out be a winner); you're also relieved to be rid of them.

TheMovieBoy Review - Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
"Napoleon Dynamite" is light on a driving narrative, but hugely likable, nonetheless, as it follows its affectionate, offbeat characters through a few months in their shoes.
For example, when Napoleon and Deb end up dancing together at the school dance, their conversation is awkward, but warm, leading to a silent reciprocal respect for each other that transcends any dialogue Hess could have cooked up.
"Napoleon Dynamite" is that rare motion picture that reminds you of a lot of other films while, at the same time, being unlike any other movie you have ever seen.

 Napoleon Dynamite - Movie Review
After their tough grandmother (Sandy Martin) is injured in a dune-buggy accident, nerdy Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder) and his even nerdier 32-year old brother Kip (Aaron Ruell) are left in the dubious care of Uncle Rico (Jon Gries), a sleazy door-to-door salesman who is "living too much in '82".
We are never really invited 'in' to Napoleon's world, but just left to gawp from the sidelines at his alien antics, for he is, from beginning to end, so consistently otherworldly and insulated from reality that whatever interior life he may have remains entirely inaccessible, making any kind of empathy or identification with him impossible.

But the title of that flick would be “Napoleon Blownapart.” No, Napoleon Dynamite is a totally new, modern character, and as authentic and uniquely drawn as the film that is named after him.
However, rather than deliberately making fun at the foibles of Napoleon, his quirky family and his equally quirky friends, there is a genuine sweetness that runs throughout the film to its charming conclusion, which left me smiling.
