Nara was the capital of Japan from 710 AD to 787 AD, and while this period was relatively short compared to that of the capital era of Kyoto, Nara's era is important due to the most active communication between Japan and other East Asian nations, establishing political and legal systems corresponding to the Chinese systems.
Nara shared many of the aspects of Chinese cities in its rectangular shape and grid pattern for streets.
People in Nara have not cut away from their ancient religious and cultural heritage like much of Japanese society has today, and hopefully, Nara will continue to be a city that one can escape to when overwhelmed by the modern world, or simply in the mood for a bit of natural scenery.
