 On Narcissism
The Psychodynamic Perspective of Narcissism The psychodynamic model of narcissism is dominated by two overlapping schools of thought, the self psychology school and the object relations school.
By contrast the object relations school, represented by Kernberg, argues that narcissism does not result from the arrest of the normal maturation of infantile narcissism, rather a narcissism represents a fixation in one of the developmental periods of childhood.
Kohut's Theory of Narcissism Kohut believes that narcissism is a normal developmental milestone, and the healthy person learns to transform his or her infantile narcissism into adult narcissism.

Dr. Sanity: NARCISSISM AND SOCIETY: Part I - The Psychology of the Self
Both kinds of Narcissism are a plague on the world; and both are well-traveled avenues for limiting freedom and imposing tyranny.
The "grandiose" Narcissism is the stimulus for individual tyrants, while the "idealistic" Narcissism leads to groups imposing their will on others.
This second kind of Narcissism (the flip side of the coin, if you will) is less obvious to an observer, since it is disguised with a veneer of concern for others.

 Dr. Sanity: Narcissism and Society
It is not my intention to claim that ALL behavior or ALL of the evil in the world is a result of Narcissism.
What I do believe is that Kohut's Psychology of the Self might be able to help us understand our own proclivities and leanings in the sphere of human activity.
In all cases I tried to make sure that an appropriate definition of the term or phrase was made, but if you get confused, it is entirely my fault.

 Anatomy of a Whistleblower
With this concept, Alford sets aside the pathological definition of narcissism—which includes as its well-known features exploitation of others and lack of empathy—and instead puts whistleblowers in such exalted company as Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
Moral narcissists strive to live up to their "ego ideal," as Freud would have it, rather than lower the ideal and say to themselves, consciously or not, "Well, I'm just going to go to work every day and go along," Alford argues.
Alford speculates that this relentless chro-nologizing helps Radack (and other whistleblowers) avoid the true moral to her story, which is that her act has no meaning in the common narrative sense: There is no ending, because true vindication—the little gal took on the big organization and won—is unlikely ever to come.

Conceptualized as malignant narcissism, this is the personality configuration of the destructive charismatic who unifies and rallies his downtrodden supporters by blaming outside enemies.
While he is driven by dreams of glory, and his political perspective is narrow and distorted, he is a shrewd tactician who has a sense of patience.
If he believes his very survival as a world class political actor is threatened, Saddam can respond with unrestrained aggression, using whatever weapons and resources are out his disposal, in what would surely be a tragic and bloody final act.

BBC NEWS Health Why perfect is not always best
"However extreme forms of perfectionism should be considered an illness similar to narcissism, obsessive compulsiveness, dependent-personality disorder and other personality disorders because of its links to distress and dysfunction."
Some scientists think perfectionism should be categorised as a medical condition, alongside other behavioural problems, such as obsessive compulsive disorder.
Professor Flett claims that certain forms of perfectionism can be linked to a host of emotional, physical and relationship problems, including depression, eating disorders, marital discord and even suicide.

Dr. Sanity: NARCISSISM AND SOCIETY: Part I - The Psychology of the Self
This part of my discussion is based on the theories of Self Psychology by Heinz Kohut.
The Diagram below summarizes the normal development of the Self; and as you can see, there are two equally important and parallel lines of development that have their origin in human biology and dependence of the infant on an adult for survival during the first years of life.
The individual during his or her development tries to find and maintain a form of self love that is compatible with healthy relationships with other(this is called “object relations” in psychiatry).

PSYCHE: A Forlorn Hope: Psychoanalysis in Search of Scientific Respectability; Review of "The Evolution of the Emotion Processing Mind" by Robert Langs
But one might go in quite different directions, following those aspects of psychoanalysis which are shared by few other parts of psychology, such as the emphasis on the psychodynamic unconscious, the death drive, ego-psychology, the analysis of narcissism, and so on.
Langs is mistaken in his assumption that it is necessary for psychoanalysis to achieve integration with the rest of modern psychology, because he has an overly narrow conception of scientific methodology.
He is forthright in acknowledging that psychoanalysis up to now has been unfalsifiable and is sharply critical of Freud and subsequent psychoanalytic theorists in failing to take seriously the lessons of evolutionary science.

The film also has representatives of what is--for lack of a better term--anti-self psychological; that is, characters who serve not only as foils to Wallace, but to show us what the nuclear self, courage, ideals are not.
There may be films that portray self psychological ideas in a fashionable light as well as others that are inimical to them.

The NPA theory of personality posits three major behavioral traits underlying personality: Narcissism (N), Perfectionism (P) and Aggression (A), leading to the formulation of a limited number of identifiable discrete "character types".
