Narcissus (mythology) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
When she died, Narcissus pined after her and pretended that the reflection he saw in the water was his sister.
Thus for the Greeks Narcissus stood for vanity, callousness and insensitivity, as he was emotionally numb to the entreaties of those who fell in love with his beauty.
The Narcissus flower blooms early in the spring and is often found in damp soil near to a pond.

 Narcissus, Greek Mythology Link.
Narcissus, who was loved by Apollo and is counted among the most handsome young men, was, according to some, the son of the river god Cephisus and the nymph Liriope, or according to others, the son of Endymion and Selene (Moon).
When later Narcissus, who was as beautiful as Dionysus 2 or Apollo, discovered his image in a pool, he fell in love with himself, and not being able to find consolation, he died of sorrow by the same pool.
For it was while she, attracted by the sweet scent of the narcissus, gathered flowers over a meadow, that the earth opened and Hades sprang out upon her with his immortal horses, and took her with him to be the queen of the Underworld.

 Blue Reincarnation Narcissus by Jaisini
As the story goes, Narcissus came to the spring or the pool and when his form was seen by him in the water, he drowned among the water-nymphs because he desired to make love to his own image.
Narcissus fell in love with his sister and, when the girl died, would go to the spring finding some relief for his love in imagining that he saw not his own reflection but the likeness of his sister.
Unlike the Roman paintings of Narcissus which show him alone with his reflection by the pool, the key dynamic in Jaisini's "Blue" is the circulation of the legend that does not end and is reincarnated in transformation when autoeroticism is not permanent and is not single by definition.

BLACK NARCISSUS was even acknowledged for its beauty at the time of its release, with master Technicolor cinematographer Jack Cardiff earning both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for his work on the film.
The use of color in BLACK NARCISSUS is something of a study in contrasts, as the film depicts the sterile, almost colorless world from which the film’s protagonists originate, then it thrusts them into an exotic colorful environment, which radically effects them.
BLACK NARCISSUS tells the story of a small group of Anglican Nuns who are given the impossible task of setting up a school and dispensary in a mountaintop palace in India, which was once the home of the ruling general’s concubines.

The poetic mood of this intimate canvas, a mood set as much by the landscape as by the rendering of Narcissus, places this work securely among a group inspired by Poussin's knowledge of Titian, and in particular his response to the D'Este Bacchanals then in the Aldobrandi collection in Rome.
The figure of Narcissus in our picture, especially the downturned profile of his head can be traced to the figure of Bacchus in Titian's Bacchus and Ariadne now in the National Gallery, London.

Black Narcissus even has a tenuous relationship with horror films — hard to believe, but there are shots of an insane-looking Ruth that must have been inspired by Val Lewton, and influential on both Herk Harvey and George Romero (the latter a huge Powell-Pressburger fan).
At 100 minutes, the film moves at a brisk pace, and the special effects are impressive — with the wind effects and the lighting, it's hard to believe that it was shot entirely in England, with extensive use of matte paintings.
