CBC.ca - Arts - Alternative Canadian Walk of Fame - Inductee: Nardwuar the Human Serviette
A Nardwuar interview could be considered just another form of guerilla journalism — Michael Moore, who calls Nardwuar “a national treasure,” is restrained in comparison — but really, it’s more like a big, sloppy hug from a relative with some kind of advanced ADD.
Nardwuar got his start in the 1980s as a DJ at the University of British Columbia’s CITR radio and on community television, spreading the cult of the Cramps and uncorking his teen-girl enthusiasm for bands old and new.
Though Nardwuar is now a staple on MuchMusic, he still haunts the less-travelled corridors of the media, writing for smallish Chart magazine and continuing to host a show on CITR.

Nardwuar the Human Serviette - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nardwuar the Human Serviette (born John Ruskin, July 5, 1968) is a Canadian celebrity interviewer and musician from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Nardwuar has also been known to be a "guerrilla journalist", often sneaking in to press conferences under the guise of a more normal reporter, to confront political leaders or other non-musical celebrities with surreal questions.
Nardwuar has a bachelor's degree (honors) in history from the University of British Columbia and wrote his honors thesis on the Kennedy assasination.

Part Journalist, Part Artist, All Serviette - OCTOBER 2000 | Thunderbird Magazine
NARDWUAR THE HUMAN Serviette, celebrity interviewer for the University of British Columbia’s CiTR radio, is describing his interview technique at a talk at the UBC School of Journalism.
Dressed in a kilt and nautical blazer, Nardwuar delivers his entire 90-minute career overview in the high-pitched, breathless rush of words instantly familiar to fans of his radio show across the country, and to the hapless celebrities who have been cornered for his interviews.
Instead, Love and Nardwuar seem to be improvising a kind of bizarre theatre, a King Lear and the Fool for the mid-nineties.

 Who iz Nardwuar?
But Nardwuar is such a sweet and genuine person (and effusively polite, as well) that I know he doesn't deliberately provoke such encounters.
And maybe Nardwuar sometimes seeks out the faded B-listers-former sitcom stars and their ilk-knowing the odds are better than even that the reaction he'll get is confrontational, but then again, that's a lot more interesting than the usual fawning idiotic celebrity coverage we're already soaking in.
Nardwuar's a kind of litmus test for the personality lurking behind the capped-teeth smile.

Nardwuar's January, 1994 confrontation with Nirvana and Courtney Love is probably his most famous (and is sadly not on this DVD), but without a doubt his best interviews are his three with Snoop Dogg, in which the pair display impeccable timing with one another, Snoop matching Nard step for step.

 Slashed Seat Affairs: Nardwuar DVD
In the White Stripes interview (now available in Real Video, MP3 and transcribed text form on Nardwuar's almost unnecessarily well-designed website), the "Human Serviette" wore a voluminous stars and stripes windbreaker, and opened proceedings by unveiling a gigantic poster of the Stripes' fellow Detroiter, Bob Seger, as depicted on his Stranger in Town album cover.
Somehow, it's both depressing and inspiring; depressing because, for much of the five hours he waits, Nardwuar seems likely to get the cold shoulder, and inspiring because he not only secures the interview, but his persistence and unflappable enthusiasm as he tries is, frankly, infectious.
The fruits of Nardwuar's considerable efforts, with Snoop Dogg and others,n can be viewed extensively on both Nard Wars I, the original MuchMusic special, and on the disc two special features, some three hours of unedited footage entitled Nard Raw.
