Nargothrond - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien, Nargothrond ("The great underground fortress on the river Narog") is the stronghold built by Finrod Felagund, delved into the banks of the river Narog in Beleriand, and the lands to the north (the Talath Dirnen or Guarded Plain) ruled by the city.
Inspired by Menegroth in Doriath, and seeking a hidden place from which to be safe from the forces of Morgoth, Finrod established it in the early years of the First Age, in the Caverns of Narog beneath the forested hills of Taur-en-Faroth on the western bank of Narog.
Túrin Turambar later came to Nargothrond and became one of its chief fighters, but he also persuaded the people to fight openly against Morgoth (the bridge was built at this time), which eventually led to its sack by the army of the dragon Glaurung.

When Nargothrond was informed of the death of Finrod, its people blamed the sons of Fëanor that had made Finrod leave in the first place, and the Elves of Nargothrond once again praised the house of Finwë, and thus also Orodreth; the new king of Nargothrond.
Orodreth, the king of Nargothrond, fell in the battle, and the Elves were driven back as Glaurung and his Orcs moved closer and closer to the gates of Nargothrond.
The open bridge of Nargothrond enabled the Orcs to cross the deep waters of Narog, and Glaurung came with his fire and crushed the gates; Elven warriors were killed immediately, and the women and children were either slain or brought to Angband as slaves.

Tolkien, Orodreth was an Elf of the First Age, the son of Angrod and nephew of Finrod Felagund, and a ruler of Nargothrond.
However Celegorm and Curufin the Sons of Fëanor were also at Nargothrond, and forced Finrod to lay down his crown.
When Túrin Turambar arrived in Nargothrond he gradually became its leader, and Orodreth held no actual rule, even if he was still lord in name.

Since its foundation by Finrod, the Elves of Nargothrond had pursued a secretive war against Morgoth, hunting their enemies by stealth and ambush rather than going to open war.
In centuries of searching, Morgoth had been unable to find the fortress of Nargothrond, but now not only was its location revealed, but the new bridge removed the defence of the River Narog.
The army of Nargothrond went out to meet Glaurung on the field of Tumhalad, some miles north of the citadel.

Nargothrond is the realm of Finrod Felagund, son of Finarfin, son of Finwë.
Basically everything to the West of the River Sirion is Nargothrond (with the exception of the Falas, by the Sea.) To the North it has borders with Nevrast and Dor-lómin, to the Northeast with Brethil and Doriath (the Rivers Teiglin and Sirion marking the borders), to the West with the Falas.
The name "Nargothrond" comes from "Narog-ost-rond" of which a rough translation would show something like "vaulted fortress on the Narog." In fact, Nargothrond proper is a system of caves craftily dug for King Finrod Felagund by dwarves.
