Narni, 42°31′ N 12°31′ E, is an ancient hilltown and comune of Umbria in central Italy, with 20,100 inhabitants according to the 2003 census; at altitude 240 m (787 ft) it overhangs a narrow gorge of the Nera River in Terni province.
The area around Narni was already inhabited in the Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages, as attested by finds in some of the caves.
Narni was part of the possessions of the Countess Matilde, once more part of the Dominions of the Church in 726.

Erasmo of Narni (1370 - 1443), better known as "Gattamelata", was was among the most famous of the condottieri or mercenaries in the Italian Renaissance.
He was born in Narni, and served a number of Italian city-states: he began with Andrea Fortebracci, called Braccio da Montone, served Pope and Florence equally, and served Venice in 1434 in the battles with the Visconti of Milan.
He was the subject of Donatello's equestrian bronze sculpture in the main square of Padua, the same city over which he became dictator in 1437.

Narni is a small fine city rising on a ness dominating the Nera river valley.
Belonging to the Guelph faction, in the 1242, Narni was allied with Rome and Perugia against the Empire; after the arrival in Italian peninsula of the Emperor Henry VII of Luxemburg (1312 A.D.), it was with the Gibelline faction, but later became again a Guelph city.
