The Chronicles of Narnia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chronicles of Narnia contain many allusions to traditional Christian ideas, presented in a format designed to make them easily accessible to younger readers; however, the books can also be read purely for their adventure, colour, and richness of ideas, and as a result have become favourites of children and adults, Christians and non-Christians alike.
According to Paul Ford's Companion to Narnia, there is no indication that Lewis was alluding to the ancient Umbrian city Nequinium, renamed Narnia by the conquering Romans in 299 BC after the river Nar, a tributary of the Tiber.
Narnia itself is populated by a wide variety of creatures most of whom would be recognisable to those familiar with European mythologies and British fairy tales.

 © Narnia - narni_eu
Although "The Chronicles of Narnia" developed from the fancies of C. Lewis, curiously some parts find their roots in Italy and Italian culture.
According to Paul Ford's Companion to Narnia, Lewis's first successes at Oxford were in the classics and ancient history, it is quite possible that he came across at least seven references to Narnia in Latin literature.
The name, Narnia, that Lewis bestowed upon his land of talking beasts, speaking streams and Aslan the lion was most likely taken from his readings of classical writers who introduced the town of Narnia to him as the last defense of Roma on the Flaminia road.

Neil Saunders passed along this Guardian review, 'Narnia represents everything that is most hateful about religion', and now I may also have to see it just because it'll feed my distaste.
In case you haven't read that one (or have forgotten it), that's the nasty one set in the pseudo-Islamic land of Calormen where evil men are dark-skinned, wear turbans and beards, fight with scimitars, and of course worship Tash, who is of course none other than Satan himself.
The imagery of the whole of Narnia being wiped out by Aslan was quite striking, but the afterlife of Narnia seemed a very poor replacement fantasy for the fantasy that was in the books, and it didn't make a lot of sense.
