Belarus has been hit by a spate of legal disputes over trademarks, which could mean a leading opposition newspaper loses its own title, and the traditional red cross may have to disappear from ambulances.
Narodnaya Volya — which means “People’s Will” — is a well-known and outspoken paper which has been in print for eight years, but it may have to change its masthead if the courts uphold a claim to the title filed by local businessman Sergei Atroschenko.

In one issue, Narodnaya Volya carried an article, which, the judges maintain tarnished their reputation.

The authorities' moves against "Narodnya volya" were announced immediately after the daily transferred 70 million rubles out of the 100 million rubles ($46,500) it was obliged to pay in libel damages to lawmaker Syarhey Haydukevich, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party.
"Narodnaya volya" Editor in Chief Iosif Syaredzich told journalists that he is not sure whether the newspaper will be able to survive next month, as it has no alternative distribution network.

Nearly 50 warnings were issued in 2000, although some were cancelled by the courts on appeal, as happened with the warnings received by BDG and Narodnaya Volya in May. For example, the newspaper Nashe Slovo received a warning for publishing the appeal of an organisation which the ministry of justice considered not registered.
