The larger narrow gauges are the more common; in those parts of the world where the railroads were built to British standards, this meant, most commonly, a gauge of 3 ft 6in (1067 mm), while those built to American standards were normally of 3 ft gauge (914 mm).
Narrow gauge is thus often used in mountainous terrain, where the savings in heavy civil engineering work can be substantial.
There is but one narrow gauge railroad still in commercial operation in the United States, the US Gypsum operation in Plaster City, California which uses a number of Alco locomotives obtained from the White Pass after its 1982 closure.

The Seventh Australian Narrow Gauge Convention was held at the Henry Nowik Lecture Centre on the city campus of Charles Sturt University in Albury, New South Wales (on the Murray River, the border of Victoria) from Friday 25 April to Sunday 27 April 2005.
The Fifth Australian Narrow Gauge Convention was held in Mitcham (in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne) on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 April 2001.
The Fourth Australian Narrow Gauge Convention – 3 and 4 April 1999 – was held in Brisbane, Queensland and featured an excursion to the Australian Narrow Gauge Museum at Woodford.

In California narrow gauge was used by those in opposition to the Southern Pacific, locally known as the "Octopus".
By building their own narrow gauge line the farmers were able to half the cost of shipping their wheat to the ships which would carry it "around the horn."

 The Leek and Manifold Light Railway
An interesting addition to the rolling stock were a pair of transporter wagons (a further three were added later), it was not unusual to carry narrow gauge wagons on standard gauge transporters but the Leek and Manifold is believed to be the only example in Britain of narrow gauge transporters carrying standard gauge wagons.
When the light railways act was passed in 1896 the construction of minor railways (of whatever gauge) was made much more cost effective by relieving their promoters of the need to observe much of the regulation which covered more ambitious projects.
In this way the problems of break of gauge were circumvented as most freight was carried in standard gauge wagons throughout.

What really caused the narrow gauge to wither and die was the construction of a brand new standard gauge line from Sarajevo to Ploce (a new port on the Adriatic) completed in 1966 and since electrified.

Mar/Apr 1997 -- Nevada County Narrow Gauge #7 (CandC #4, one of the original 8 bought.) Though it's gone through a few changes at this point of it's life (steel cab, new boiler, 41" instead of original 44" wheels) the running gear is still the same.
