 The KD2BD 9600 Baud Modem
The Bell-202 AFSK modem standard that is still widely used for the majority of 1200 bit per second VHF-FM packet radio communications uses audio tones of 1200 Hz and 2200 Hz to represent the binary '1's and '0's of packet radio's HDLC baseband serial data.
The modem sends a series of pulses generated by operational amplifier U9D to the groundstation receiver to tune it lower in frequency during a satellite pass in compensation for doppler shift.
Please consult the operating manual of the transceiver used in conjunction with this modem to determine whether a positive pulse or a switch to ground is necessary to tune the receiver lower in frequency via the microphone connection, and make the appropriate connections between the modem and the ground station transceiver.

The 220MHz ITS Spectral Allocation: Potential, Pitfalls and Applications
In a narrowband system the duration of the modulation symbols are very long in comparison to the multipath delay spread on the channel and hence all the multipath is effectively combined into a single multiplicative distortion process (i.e., frequency nonselective fading [6]).
A wireless modem operating at 220MHz has circuits operating at a much higher frequency and hence several operating characteristics must be considered in a modem design.
Modem products will be forthcoming which incorporate multiple operating modes (mobile, point-to-point, and multiple access) and sophisticated designs using large QAM constellations, equalization, pilot symbol assisted modulation, forward error control coding, and diversity.

Modern baseband modems operate in the digital domain, either employing dedicated hardware or a digital signal processor, with the necessary ADCs and DACs positioned between the modem and the RF transceiver.
The alternative is to integrate both the modems and their associated RF transceivers into one large CMOS chip, using the RF capabilities of modern CMOS processes to cope with the RF part.
Narrowband modems such as those required for Bluetooth and GSM/GPRS are typically hard-wired.

Broadband Barriers: Partnering Effectively with Dominant Cable ISPs
Currently, most cable modems are sold through cable modem access providers themselves, but industry players are gearing up for the inevitable shift from carrier distribution to retail.
Although cable modem installations will still require a visit by cable ISP technicians to install a new cable outlet and test the connection, retail distribution of standardized, bundled modems will be an important step toward transforming cable Internet service into a plug-and-play application.
The choice on the narrowband front is far greater: Five ISPs have a reach of over one million subscribers each, and portals offer even more diversity in terms of their audiences and reach.

Cable Modems are boxes/devices that enable you to hook up your computer to a local cable (coax, fibre optic etc.) operators line and receive data (Optus Cable and Telstra Cable).
Most good 56Kbps modem connections will be able to transfer at a rate of 5/6KBps, thus a 20K document would take just 4 seconds to download.
Modulating Demodulators (modems) modulate outgoing digital signals from a computer or other digital device to analogue signals for a conventional copper twisted pair telephone line and demodulates the incoming analogue signal and converts it to a digital signal for the digital device.

The Heartland Institute: Access to the Internet: Regulation or Markets? (Policy Study)
Until the cable modem roll-out began in early 1999, the local telephone companies were very slow to deploy DSL--even though the technology is a decade old.
Still, cable modems do have one important competitive advantage: A cable modem user can be 30 miles away from the cable provider, but the DSL user can be only a little more than three miles from the phone company.
Satellite modems share one weakness with cable modems: both are "shared bandwidth pipes." So the more users of a given satellite (or cable television line) at a given time, the slower the transmission speed.

Current Internet access via a 28.8, 33.6, or 56 kbps modem is referred to as voice band or narrowband modem technology.
An analog modem essentially carries data by using the circuit-switched telephony infrastructure, originally designed to handle voice traffic.
As the number of users connecting to the Internet through analog modems grew, carriers were forced to build out both their voice and data networks, since an internet connection using an analog modem must pass through the voice infrastructure to get to the data network.

Players using narrowband connections will soon discover that they can not play their network games to the fullest potentional.
The general consensus is that gamers in Canada have a slightly more difficult time getting online, especially those with certain cable modem services, as several Canadian ISPs will not have finished necessary upgrades to their infrastructure until the end of the year.
It is not exactly clear why the decision was made to have gamers mail in the coupon to get the game, instead of including it with the adapter package, though it is possible Sony may change the freebie in the future.
