Narssarssuaq (also spelled Narsarsuaq, Greenlandic for Great Plain) was the principal city of Greenland in the times of Erik the Red.
In 1951, it was agreed that Denmark and the U.S. would jointly oversee the airbase; in 1958, the U.S. abandoned the air base (called Bluie West One), but it was reopened in 1959 by the Danish government after the loss of the vessel Hans Hedtoft with all souls south of Cape Farewell.
Ever since, the area has been used for civil air traffic and the thriving tourism industry in and around Narssarssuaq, whose attractions include its great diversity of wildlife and the first Christian church on the American continent.
No special preparations were made to the aircraft which flew on standard tanks and in temperatures which fell as low as -17 degrees centigrade.
Fuel stops were made at Vagar in the Faeroes, Reykjavic, Iceland, and Kulusuk, Narssarssuaq and Godthab in Greenland.
The aircraft was captained by GKN Westland deputy chief test pilot Jerry Tracy, with Bristow Helicopter's Tim Noble as co-pilot and a senior Agusta team comprising of Fiorenzo Mussi, Paolo Garlaschelli, Angelo Sansoterra, Angelo Zorzella, and Sergio Tosi.
Although a flight is planned as a VFR flight, the Canadian government insists that pilots carry IFR publications due to the ubiquitous potential for instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) in the NAT region.
Aircraft intending to land or anticipating a possible diversion to Narssarssuaq, Greenland shall carry either the BGBW Visual Approach Chart depicting the fjord approach, or a topographical chart of large enough scale to permit map reading up the fjord.
These plates become a real necessity when one is forced to make an unscheduled landing at an airport with a hazardous NDB approach such as Narssarssuaq, Greenland.
Our main expedition object was to reach the nunatak group 2092, 2160, 2300, if the conditions would have allowed it, we planned to travel more towards the east cost.
From Narssarssuaq, we first followed the road, later the footpath to the edge of the glacier.
Last summer we were on an expedition in southern Greenland, in the area east of the Narssarssuaq Airport.

It was a gray, dismal morning in Iceland, and my wife and I anticipated an uneventful flight to Narssarssuaq, Greenland.
This same low was also blowing warm, moist air over the massive Greenland ice cap, and it was condensing into a thick ground-hugging stratus.
And, though quite powerful and capable of being received all the way from Canada on an eastbound flight, the NDBs at Narssarssuaq and Simultac (on the west coast of Greenland) were weakened by atmospheric conditions.

SS DORCHESTER'S CALL SIGN REISSUED(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Radio call signs are usually selected from a long list of call signs that have once been issued to various ships and land stations in past years.
Upon checking, the FCC reported that our station’s call sign, WOBO, was once assigned to the SS DORCHESTER, a transport ship used to supply war materials to a World War II air base in Narssarssuaq, Greenland, known as Bluie West One.
This was the main base to ferry planes to England to support the war effort.

Most of the way was just a large expanse of water before getting to about 20 miles off the coast of Greenland when the weather took a real turn for the worse.
Snow moved in, cutting the visibility down to a mere 1,000 ft and the cloud base down to 500 ft. This was not a good sign as the approach to Narssarssuaq (maximum word score in Scrabble?), is through a maze of Fjords with mountains either side.
It was down to surface skimming and keeping your eyes out to make sure you go down the right Fjord.
