NARTH has seen that the main reason clients seek change from homosexuality is not, as the A.P.A. states, anti-gay social pressure--but dissatisfaction with a gay lifestyle.
NARTH would like to see the A.P.A.--which is rightfully concerned about scientific accuracy--take a responsible role to correct the very widely disseminated, popular misconception that homosexuality is genetic.
We urge the APA to enter into communication with NARTH to establish a well-designed, scientific study to measure pathology associated with a gay lifestyle, and the effects of psychoanalytically informed, reparative therapy on a client's self-esteem, self-understanding, unwanted sexual behavior, and same-sex fantasy.

NARTH is a non-profit corporation, funded largely by private donations, with a small but dedicated staff whose professional members work on a volunteer basis.

NARTH Scientific Advisory Committee member Joseph Berger said on a blog in reaction to a San Francisco Chronicle article on gender identity issues, “I suggest, indeed, letting children who wish go to school in clothes of the opposite sex - but not counselling other children to not tease them or hurt their feelings.
The hairsplitting about saying that NARTH didn’t “advocate bullying” but simply recommended that bully “not be stopped” when it comes to these kids is the worst kind of abstractionist bullshit; the kind that literally ends up costing lives.
NARTH’s Dr. Berger would almost certainly push some kids over the edge that I narrowly avoided, if his recommendation were to be applied.

NARTH has long pushed for a public forum in which the questions surrounding reparative therapy could be discussed and it appeared that, through the intervention of Dr. Spitzer, that day would come.
