Narva, river, c.50 mi (80 km) long, rising in Lake Peipus (Chudskoye), E Estonia, and flowing northeast past the city of Narva into the Gulf of Finland.
After Estonia was forcibly incorporated into the USSR (1940), all Estonian territory E of the river was transferred (1945) to the Russian SFSR (now Russia); Estonia regards the transfer as an illegal annexation.

Founded by the Danes in 1223, Narva passed to the Livonian Knights in 1346 and was a member of the Hanseatic League.

Estonian police have charged a 21-year-old man with the murder of a young woman in Narva, but they say they believe a serial killer who rapes his female victims remains on the loose.
Wednesday police said they had made an arrest in one of the murders, that of Oksana Kiselyova, 27, whose body was found last month on the banks of the Narva River.
Alexander Sovolyov, a spokesman for the Narva police, identified the suspect in Kiselyova's murder only as Ruslan K. They said he was an unemployed Narva resident, but they would not say whether he knew the victim.
