Naryn is the provincial administrative center of the Naryn Oblasty in central Kyrgyzstan, with a population of 40,049 (1999).
It is located at 41°26′ N 76°0′ E (http://kvaleberg.com/extensions/mapsources/index.php?params=41_26_N_76_0_E_region:KG_type:city(40,049)), situated on both banks of the Naryn River, one of the main head waters of the Syr Darya, which cuts a picturesque gorge through the town.
From Naryn, the main road (one of the branches of the ancient Silk Road) through the sparsely settled central Kyrgyz highlands leads to Torugart Pass and China.

It is situated on a treeless, high mountain plateau, and is surrounded by lush mountain meadows (jailoo).
As such it is used by the shepherds of the Kochkor, Naryn and At Bashi regions for summer pastures for their flocks.
If you want to, it is even possible to arrange a helicopter to fly you up from Bishkek (at a price!!!) but although you would a fascinating experience flying over the mountains you would miss out on some spectacular scenery en-route.
