Ambassador by Rambler, 1958-1961 1959 Ambassador sedanFollowing George Mason's unexpected death in the fall of 1954, George Romney (whom Mason had been grooming as his eventual successor), succeeded him.
AMC Ambassador, 1966-1974 Part of Abernathy's strategy included phasing out the Rambler name, which he believed the public associated so strongly with compacts that it was a hindrance to AMC's other models.
The 1974 Ambassador was available only as a four-door sedan and station wagon; the two-door hardtop was dropped after 1973 since the intermediate Matador would adopt a new coupe body for 1974 and the shared body would no longer be possible.

The full-sized Nash and Hudson lines suffered from severely dwindling sales, so in the 1958 model year the Nash and Hudson names were dropped and Rambler became the sole AMC marque.
Nash's full-sized lines at the time of the merger included the Ambassador (a name that had been used since 1932 on Nash's biggest and most luxurious models) and the Statesman.
The 1955 Ambassador rode on a 121 inch wheelbase, and the Statesman's was 114".

Nash Motors' first use of the name Ambassador was during the 1927 model year when a specially trimmed four-door, five-passenger club sedan version of Nash's Advance Six automobile (designated model 267) was developed.
The Ambassador model lost its position as Nash's most expensive car in 1929 with the introduction of a nine passenger limousine model which was carried through the 1934 model year.
Nash would stand pat with the model arrangement for the shortened 1942 model year, although the 600 would no longer be known as an Ambassador.

The Nash and Hudson nameplates are put to rest by the newly introduced 1958 models (Hudsons had been merely dressed-up Nash's since the 1955 model year and were known by some as "Hashes").
The Ambassador, basically a Rambler stretched from the windshield forward, is introduced for the 1958 model year.
The 1961 Ambassador is the last with a 117" wheelbase (from 1962-1964 it was a dressed-up Classic).

American Motors Corporation was formed by the amalgamation of Nash and Hudson in 1954, and disappeared as an entity when the Chrysler Corporation bought it in 1987.

Nash Motors (which in 1954 became a division of American Motors Corporation) early in 1951 brought out the Nash-Healey, the first sports car to be introduced by a U.S. manufacturer in 20 years.
Donald Healey, managing director of the Donald Healey Motor Company of Warwick, England had built a car using a Nash Ambassador engine and drive line which he entered in the 24-hour LeMans endurance race in July, 1950.
The engine and main parts were manufactured by Nash at its plant in Kenosha, Wisconsin, then shipped to England, where the chassis with "trailing link" front-end suspension was added by the Donald Healey Company.
