Nashorn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nashorn ("Rhino"), one version of which was also known as the Hornisse was a German tank destroyer of World War II.
Nashorn's gun was one of the most effective antitank guns deployed during the war.
Their ability to engage the enemy at long distances negated the disadvantages they had of light armour and a high profile and was suited to the open, flat landscape of much of Russia.

The Nashorn has also been a very popular subject for scratch building and was Dragon's first WWII kit.
Nashorn were produced during the period when German AFV left the factory in dark yellow (dunkel gelb) and any camouflage was applied by the troops in the field.
In winter, the crews often applied white wash. Nashorn's usually had the national cross on the side armour and no tactical numbers.

Its strong point was the powerful 8.8 cm gun L/71, the one that will be mounted on the Kingtiger later in the war.
Identification: The lenght of the gun, the muzzle brake and the absence of a recuperator above the tube allow to distinguish the Nashorn from its close cousin, the Hummel (a 15 cm howitzer mounted on the same chassis).
Both types of panzer were engaged in combat for the first time during the battle of Kursk.

In late 1942, Nashorn's chassis and hull was used in the development of Hummel (Sd.Kfz.165).
Eventually, Nashorns were replaced by the new generation of more powerful and better armored Panzerjagers like Jagdpanzer IV and Panzerjager V Jagdpanther but remained in service to the end of the war.
Nashorn from 2nd Company of schwere Heeres Panzer Jaeger Abteilung 93 was also responsible for the destruction of the only M26 Pershing, destroyed in Europe.

Because the Nashorn was to be equipped with an 88mm Pak 43 L/71 gun, the engine was moved to the center and the hull was lengthened to allow adequate room and weight distribution for the long-barreled 88mm gun.
Nashorn's crews traveled in an open-top fighting compartment with all its weather-related disadvantages.
On the Eastern Front, many reports stated that Nashorns were able to destroy IS-2 tanks at distances as great as 4000 meters.

Since both sets of parts come on the same sprues, and the main difference here is the new travel lock and the special gun barrel that comes with the upper mount attached, most of the comments from the earlier kit and review stand as is.
Note that this IS a different kit and unless you want to fool around with the barrels or replace them, you have to purchase each kit to get either a Hornisse or a Nashorn.
The gun consists of some 12 parts, with the rear half of the breech split horizontally rather than vertically; if neatly assembled and sanded down with a "Flex-i-File" this should cause no problems and does remove the pesky ridge along the top of the barrel.

History: The Nashorn or Rhinoceros, which later became known as the Hornisse (Hornet), was designed in 1942 as a suitable self-propelled mount for the 88mm PaK43.
In October of 1942, an order was placed for a total production of 500 units, 494 of which were eventually delivered, however 100 of these were ordered to be produced by May of 1943 to be ready for the Summer Offensive.
The Nashorn was built on the same chassis as the Hummel, the only basic difference being the Hummel carried a 150mm gun.

Notes: Special optics and the 88L71 allowed the Nashorn ("Rhino") to kill enemy tanks at extreme ranges.
The armor, however, was light and the Nashorn was an easy kill at close ranges.
It was issued to special heavy PzJg units and saw action from summer 1943 in the East, West, and in Italy.
