The Nashville Zoo at Grassmere is a zoo located six miles (10 km) southeast of downtown Nashville, Tennessee.
The zoo was founded in 1996, the result of a merger between two upstart competing facilities, Nashville Zoo (located in nearby Ashland City) and Grassmere Wildlife Park (which was located at the zoo's present location).
The zoo is active in conservation activities including participating in a number of the programs in the Species Survival Plan which is managed by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association.

The Nashville Zoo at Grassmere is commercial zoo located in the heart of the urban Nolensville Road area of Nashville.
As Nashville grew to the south, urbanization surrounded the farm, transforming it into a small green island amid a sea of asphalt and concrete.
Due to financial difficulties and competition with the Nashville Zoo (then located in Cheatham County) the park was eventually closed after a few years and was taken over by the Nashville Zoo.

Seven short years later, Grassmere Wildlife Park closed its doors because of low attendance and Nashville Zoo was given the option by Nashville Mayor Phil Bredesen to relocate to the Grassmere property and develop a "new " zoo for Nashville.
Although Nashville Zoo has been successful in Joelton seeing approximately 300,000 visitors per year and exhibiting about 300 animals from around the globe, the relocation to Grassmere provided a unique opportunity.
Grassmere is 200 acres in size as opposed to the 50-75 acres of possible exhibit space at the Joelton property.
