Nasi Kandar is a popular northern Malaysian dish that origins from Penang.
Traditionally, nasi kandar is always served with its side dishes on a single plate.
The most famous nasi kandar stalls in Penang are Kassim Restaurant, Craven A and Line Clear.In Selangor the most famous restaurant is Restoran Darul Ehsan.The owner of the Restoran Darul Ehsan is Thaulat,Abdul Malik and Rahmathulla.In recent years, several chain restaurants have appeared such as Pelita Nasi Kandar and Kayu Nasi Kandar.

When I walk through the average KL shopping mall foodcourt (sadly, my experience with nasi kandar is limited to such a setting), I wouldn't be able to tell you if I've ordered nasi kandar or just rice with curries.
Although Nasi Kandar and Nasi Campur (as the rice and lauk sold by the Malays are collectively called) look the same, they sure don't taste the same.

Nasi Padang originates from Padang in Indonesia so it has some Indonesian roots in its dishes like rendangs and sayur lodeh, and are usually sold by Malays.
Nasi Kandar is derived from a mix of Indian and Malay influence, most famous in Penang where the hawkers move around selling it from containers slung across a pole called kandar.
Nasi Kandar is mostly sold at Indian Muslim set-ups like the much-loved mamak stalls in Malaysia.

Gawd, I miss KL - Nasi Kandar Pelita Subang's branch use to be amongst my favourite haunts when my friends go mamak (a concept Singaporeans seem to miss completely).
Nov 5, 2006 7:08:58 PM the name nasi kandar was derived because the early sellers in penang, where it originated from, used to carry the rice and ingredients on a pole and walk around selling nasi kandar.
