Nasinu, with a population of over 70,000 people stretching between Suva and Nausori, was declared a town by the People's Coalition Government in 2000.
An interim town council was appointed whose responsibility was to prepare the town for municipal elections and subsequent levying of rates and provision of municipal services.
During the interim period, the government was responsible for financing the activities of the Nasinu Council.

Nasinu, Fiji/Nairobi, March 2001 - Fiji has become the first country in the Pacific Islands to launch serious actions to protect the stratospheric Ozone Layer.
At a training session at Nasinu for its 30 refrigeration technicians, the government launched an island-wide training programme to reduce the emission of life threatening ozone-depleting substances.
The Nasinu training session will be followed by the Regional Compliance Action Workshop on the Montreal Protocol on in Western Samoa from 24-26 April 2001, where 14 Pacific Island countries will participate.

A motion to make an annual grant of $1m to the Nasinu Town Council to solve its current infrastructure and cash flow problems was defeated in the lower house today.
The Minister for Housing Mataiasi Ragigia laid the blame for the Nasinu Town Council’s predicament squarely at the feet of the FLP Coalition government, which he said declared Nasinu a town with out proper planning.
However in the case of Nasinu Sir, a municipality was declared by the FLP Coalition Government without having due regard for the upgrading of roads and drains."

FIJI’S Nasinu club braved a hardy challenge from Sydney University to retain the Air Niugini World Barbarians rugby Sevens Cup with a 26-17 win at the Lloyd Robson oval in Port Moresby yesterday.
Nasinu, who were defending the title, saw the opposition tryline quickly in the opening minute through the fleet-footed Cawanibuka, converted by Apenisa Valesu, for a 7-0 lead.
Nasinu went ahead again in the fifth minute after hooker Sakaraia Labalaba scored and successfully converted again to give them a 14-7 lead.

The manager of New World supermarket at Nasinu was held at gunpoint and forced to hand over $50,000 while his staff were threatened by 10 masked men carrying cane knives and crowbars.
The staff were attacked and suffered physical damage when they refused to divulge where the cash was stored.

IN an all-Melanesian affair, the Nasinu Club of Fiji became the inaugural winners of the Air Niugini World Barbarians Sevens tournament by defeating PNG Barbarians 33-14 at the Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby yesterday.
Nasinu, who were pre-tournaments favourites never looked back from day one and took out the number one spot ahead of Darwin, Queensland and Malaysia in Pool B. PNG also finished on top of their Pool C in front of PNG Defence Force Combine, Aboriginals and Easts of Brisbane.
Both teams had players who have had international experience in the seven's competition and were not going to let anything stand in their way.

The performance of a Nasinu youth troupe included European, Fijian, and Indian dances.

"From what I have gathered, more schools in the Nasinu have joined in the competition and this would sure increase the number of athletes to 3500 compared to only 3000 last year," he said.
Tagivakatini said for that reason they have excluded the open grade competition.

Acting in liaison with Australian Federal Police and police forces in New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong, the newly created Fiji Transnational Crime Unit is believed to have begun tracking a group of Chinese nationals who they had concluded were linked to a haul of 357 kilograms of heroin in Suva in 2000.
The group - said to be co-ordinated by two ethnic Chinese Fiji citizens - allegedly set up a legitimate company, Y Tai Ltd, as a plastics manufacturer and import-export business and leased two factories in the Nasinu and Laucala Beach suburbs of Suva.
It is also believed that an account set up by the company with the ANZ bank in Suva received regular funds from Hong Kong, in installments of $A15,000 to $A25,000.
