  History of the Band
Nassau County is located on Long Island, NY and is comprised of nine battalions made up of seventy-two fire departments.
Renamed the Nassau County Firefighter's Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, and keeping the name Fir Na Tine proudly displayed on the band patch, today's band membership is 50% volunteer firefighters and the rest is family and friends of the volunteer fire service.
In 2003, the association with the Emerald Society was formally dissolved and the band reformed as the Nassau County Firefighter's Pipes and Drums.

“[Nassau Street] is one of the narrowest streets in the city, and is built up with lofty houses, which shut out the sunlight and give it a dark and gloomy appearance.
The street’s name was bestowed in honor of the Dutch Prince William of Nassau, who in 1689 became King William III of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
In 1815 Nassau was opened to Cedar Street, among other local improvements that “promise much amendment in the convenience and beauty of this city, not unworthy of a growing metropolis, rapidly resuming the first rank in commercial activity and importance in the Unites States,” according to the Columbian.

The Brooklyn Crosstown Line as a four-track subway, is estimated to cost $68,700,000; the Washington Heights subway is estimated to cost $67,500,000; the Nassau Street Branch, $13,500,000; the 14th Street-Eastern as a subway, $11,000,000, and the Ashland Place Connection, $4,450,000.
The Nassau Street Branch is not only in the interests of the Company, but in the interests of the car rider, for its construction would tremendously improve the efficiency of the service between Brooklyn and Manhattan.
The completed 14th Street Line would relieve Canal Street and the Nassau-Broad Line would allow loop operation with full use of the four tracks on the Manhattan Bridge and thus permit approximately 90 trains, or 50% increase, to be operated through DeKalb Avenue station with corresponding increase on each of the outlying lines.

The BMT Jamaica Line is the oldest rapid transit line running in the city today, opening in 1883.
On September 16, 1908, the line is extended over the Williamsburg Bridge to Essex Street (Converted trolley terminal), and on the other end to Cresent Street.
Service ran from this station(which is where the BMT Jamaica Line ended until that part was torn down) to the other end at Chambers Street, making every stop except for peak direction rush hour trains, which operated express from Eastern Parkway to the Williamsburg Bridge.

The Fulton Street/Broadway same can be done from Nassau St complex does not really count because you can transfer from either IRT East side 4/5 platform to the northbound BMT J/M/Z platform and the the southbound J/M/Z platform to the IRT West side 2/3 island platform without requiring the use of the A/C platform.
All of these lines are connected to a lower level, running under Canal Street and served by the N/Q lines.

Chambers Street is a station on the BMT Nassau Street Line of the New York City Subway.
Located at the intersection of Centre and Chambers Streets beneath the Manhattan Municipal Building, it is served by the J train (all times), the M train (all times except weekends and late nights), and the Z train (rush hours).
The Chrystie Street Connection, completed in 1967, severed the Nassau line's connection to the Manhattan Bridge, so that the bridge tracks could connect instead to the uptown IND Sixth Avenue Line.

In 1931, the Nassau Street subway loop was completed, making Chambers St. a through station south to the Montague Street tunnel to Brooklyn.
The Manhattan Bridge connection was severed in 1967 as part of the Chrystie Street construction project, which reduced the importance of and number of trains served at Chambers St. If the extra platforms weren't needed in 1931, they certainly weren't needed after 1967.
The lack of weekend service along Nassau St. is alleviated by transfers here to the IRT East Side/Lexington Avenue Brooklyn Bridge station, and further north at Canal St. to the BMT Broadway Subway.

Between the Whitehall Street Station and the Montague Street Tunnel (named after the street under which this line runs on the Brooklyn side of the East River) is a track connection.
There is no connection from the Nassau Street line that would allow a train to reach the Whitehall station where we are boarding.
The Canal Street Station on the Bridge tracks is located on an east-west line just east of the station where we will be stopping; that station is also used as a walkway for transfers between other lines that share this mega-station.
