NEAR NASSIRIYA, Iraq, March 24 (Reuters) -- US Marines pounded Nassiriya with heavy artillery fire on Monday, and moved a light armoured battalion through the southern Iraqi city, opening a second route north to Baghdad.
U.S. troops captured the northern ends of the two bridges in the east of Nassiriya early on Sunday, opening the way for forces to head north toward the Tigris river and Baghdad.

Nassiriya is at the western end of the waterlands once occupied by 200,000 Marsh Arabs, the Ma'dan, whose culture, thousands of years old, was all but destroyed by Saddam Hussein with terrible loss of life.
A few yards from the bridge it is possible to sit by the riverbank and watch the green spring reeds which defined the marshes bending in the wind.

Reuters correspondent Sean Maguire said the Marines he was traveling with were stuck and had to decide whether to fight through to Nassiriya's bridges over the Euphrates river about 225 miles southeast of Baghdad, or go around the city.
Iraq displayed five shaken U.S. soldiers apparently captured in the ambush near Nassiriya and also filmed the bloodied bodies of up to eight men they said were dead American soldiers.
A CNN television correspondent at Nassiriya on Sunday quoted eyewitnesses in the battle as saying they had seen about 10 American bodies around an amphibious assault vehicle that had been hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

NASSIRIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - Doctors supporting U.S. Marine combat operations in Iraq had to brush up their child delivery skills on Wednesday when a young Iraqi woman was brought to their base and gave birth to a baby girl.
Earlier, U.S. Marines staged a decoy attack to cover the rescue of a female prisoner of war from a Nassiriya hospital where she had been held since her convoy was ambushed on March 23.
The birth is the kind of good publicity U.S. forces sorely need as they try to win Iraqi hearts and minds in the face of a rising death toll among civilians which has sparked anger in Iraq and across the Islamic world.

Dalle immagini televisive riprese dalla base italiana di White Horse distante 13 chilometri da Nassiriya, si vedono esplosioni e traccianti illuminare il cielo (forse i miliziani che cercano d'ingaggiare elicotteri a bassa quota?), si vocifera di un intervento aereo statunitense.
A questo proposito, la tutto sommato cauta reazione italiana manifestata durante la battaglia potrebbe in realtà nascondere un elemento di sportività: si aspetta infatti che i sadristi siano in grado di confrontarsi alla pari con i nostri militari.
