The Nassophorea are a class of ciliate protozoa.
These are usually small and ellipsoid or crescent shaped, with the right side of the body curved outward, and generally have a rigid pellicle.
As first defined by Small & Lynn in 1981, the Nassophorea also included the peniculids and, in a separate subclass, the hypotrichs.

 Reasoning behind Denis Lynn's revised classification of the Phylum Ciliophora
This superclass includes ciliates with oral structures that include adoral polykinetids that can be as few as three in number and a paroral on the right side, which can be circular when the oral region is apical.
The classification of Small and Lynn (1981, 1985) increased the number of classes of ciliates from the three proposed by de Puytorac et al.
(1993) increased this number to eleven by recognizing the heterotrichs, oligotrichs, plagiopylians, and vestibuliferians as classes and submerging the prostomates within the class NASSOPHOREA (de Puytorac, 1994).

I have used a phylogeny derived from small subunit rRNA sequences of members of the Classes Oligohymenophorea, Colpodea, Prostomatea, Plagiopylea, Nassophorea and Phyllopharyngea, constructed using members of the Class Spirotrichea as the outgroup.
The topology indicates that the buccokinetal type, in particular ophryobuccokinetal, is ancestral for the Oligohymenophorea.
Moreover, the monoparakinetal type of the Suborder Hymenostomatina (Subclass Hymenostomatia) and the pleurotelokinetal type of the Suborder Ophryoglenina (Subclass Hymenostomatia) must be derived from this.
