The Duleep Trophy was inaugurated in 1961-1962 and was contested by five zonal teams (West, East, North, South, and Central) until 2002-2003.

Lancashire won the Gillette Cup, the precursor of the NatWest Trophy, for a record third successive year in 1972.

The Gillette Cup, the world's first domestic knockout tournament for first-class sides, started in 1963 as a 65-over-a-side competition and was an immediate success, and the first sellout final between Sussex and Worcestershire set the pattern for many years to come.
But through to the 1980s, the Gillette Cup (which became the NatWest Trophy in 1981) provided domestic midweek entertainment through the summer as well as the traditional end-of-season climax on the first Saturday in September.
There were upsets - Durham became the first Minor County to beat a first-class side when they humiliated Yorkshire in 1973 - and many memorable matches, such as the epic semi-final between Lancashire and Gloucestershire in the Old Trafford twilight in 1971.
