The Natal Sharks Board report that the average size of bull sharks caught in their beach nets have significantly declined in recent years, which does not bode well for South African populations of the species.
Bull sharks have relatively small eyes as compared to other carcharhinid sharks, which suggests that vision may not be as important a hunting tool for this species which often occurs in turbid waters.
Bull sharks often appear sluggish as they slowly cruise along the bottom, but are quite quick and effective at capturing smaller, agile prey, and are capable of burst speeds of over 11 mph (19 km/h).

Shark net reduction to help ecology - WildNet Africa News File
The number of shark nets at several beaches along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast will be scaled down by 25% to 30% this week as part of a Sharks Board initiative to reduce negative ecological impacts.
The Board was confident that the number of nets could be reduced without compromising the safety of bathers - and at the same time reduce the number of sharks, dolphins, turtles and rays killed in the nets.
The Sharks Board said comparative research conducted over several years had shown that Australia used far fewer nets to protect its bathers against shark attacks, and that the KZN coast had too many nets.

Sharks Magazine vault publications - June 2000 regulars
I first met Gary Teichmann during my first year in Kwazulu-Natal in 1984 when I took the Natal Craven Week team for a couple of practices and also attended the Craven Week in Bloemfontein where he was.
I’ll never forget the Natal loose forwards back then were Freddie Swanepoel of Glenwood High School, Steve Atherton of Pinetown Boys’ High and Gary Teichmann of Hilton College.
Gary Teichmann is a perfect example of a successfully manufactured leader, one who took the role with some uncertainty and through his own talents, hard work and a hell of a lot of unrestrained support, turned into one of the all-time greats.
