Natalie Clein, winner of the 1994 BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition, substituted for an indisposed Han-Na Chang.
It would be an act of generosity to describe her playing as mediocre: despite her animated grimaces and attempts to act passion none of this came through in her playing, which largely lacked the real feeling and bravura required for this work.
Clein's opening passages of the Allegro were indistinct, with her thin wiry tone being buried by the full-bodied and expressive Philharmonia strings; indeed, throughout the cellos had more persona and presence than the soloist who was so inaudible she could have been miming the work.

Clein’s grave, thoughtful approach – more a question than a bravura statement – could scarcely be more different to Du Pré’s iconic interpretation; introducing the first subject as a muted, private improvisation, maintaining and increasing tension though the Allegro Molto and weaving an attenuated Adagio of impeccable restraint… with achingly sweet gradations of diminuendi.”
Clein, who is still in her early 20s, employs rich, singing tone and an expressive style that honors the musical line above all else… The themes of the opening movements were expressed in a flurry of dazzling technique, and the brief, elegiac Adagio was imbued with a quiet eloquence.”
“Natalie Clein has a striking stage presence: radiant, natural and exquisitely expressive… this was chamber music at its best… Clein has a tremendously accurate left hand… a highly refreshing interpretation… Throughout the sonata, she created an exciting contrast beteen Beethoven’s alternating lyricism and rhythmic energy.”

This was the first of a series of lunchtime concerts, as part of the Bath International Music Festival, under the direction of its new Musical Director, Joanna MacGregor, whose programme is as adventurous and eclectic as one might have expected from her.
Billed as ‘Natalie Clein and Friends’ this ensemble brought together four young musicians who certainly played as though they were loving the experience of playing together, especially in a work to which they were so obviously committed.
Though Clein was the ‘leader’ of the group, it is the pianist who perhaps has to do most to hold together a performance of the Quatuor, and Charles Owen did so quite admirably.
