The City of Natchitoches is the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase.
The Louisiana Purchase was the purchase of the French province of Louisiana by the United States in 1803.
Natchitoches Parish was created by the act of April 10, 1805 that divided the Louisiana Territory into 12 parishes, including Orleans, Iberville, Rapides and Natchitoches.

The fact that a significant number of Africans from closely related cultures came to Louisiana was a factor in their ability to retain many cultural traits and contribute to the Creole culture that was developing in New Orleans and South Louisiana.
Many people think of South Louisiana as "Cajun," the term being a local version of "Acadian." Today's Cajun culture resulted from the blending of several groups, primarily the Acadians, the descendants of French Acadians who were expelled from Nova Scotia by the British in 1755 and who began arriving in Louisiana in 1765.
Founded in 1714, Natchitoches, the earliest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, was settled by the French, as a way to tie into the Indian trade system dominated in the Red River Valley by the Caddo Indians.
