Nathan Heald was one of the earliest settlers who made their way to the Monongahela valley, he having removed here with his family from Loudoun County, Va., in 1771.
The property which Nathan Heald owned in Pike Run township was a tract of four hundred and twenty-eight acres called “Mill Place,” which was warranted to Thomas Miller on Feb. 18, 1785, and assigned to Heald, to whom it was surveyed June 12, 1786.
On April 12, 1792, Nathan Heald bought of John Townsend the tract of land called “Spicewood Valley,” and Sept. 24, 1796, he purchased of Benjamin Townsend the property known as “Mason’s Bower.” Nathan Heald was the father of William Heald, who celebrated his one hundredth birthday in 1866.

Heald reluctantly agreed, and the extra weapons and ammunition were destroyed, and their remnants dumped into an abandoned well.

Nathan Heald (New Ipswich, New Hampshire September 24, 1775 - O'Fallon, Missouri April 27, 1832) was an officer in the United States army during the War of 1812.
Captain Heald was stationed in Fort Wayne, Indiana prior to his appointment at Fort Dearborn, where he relieved the fort's first commander, John Whistler in 1810.
Heald waited until August 14 to leave the fort, when a group of Miami Indians led by his wife's uncle, Captain William Wells, arrived from Fort Wayne to provide assistance.

Heald and his wife were reported to have been saved by a sympathetic Potawatomi chief, Leopold Pokagon, who later blamed the massacre on the “firewater” consumed by the warriors before the attack.
Heald would later become the heroine of one of soldier-turned-author, John Richardson’s, later novels.

In response to the order from General Hull to withdraw to Fort Wayne, he first distibuted much trade goods to the Indians in return for promises of safe conduct, and then set out on the morning of August 15th with his soldiers, a handful of local settlers and militia, and their families.
Heald were badly wounded, but survived the battle, ending it in the hands of different groups of Indians.
Heald's predicament and sent one of her husband's clerks to trade an old mule and some whiskey to the band holding her, so that they would transfer to the one that held her husband.

British Agents began turning the Potawatomis against the troops in the fort and as the conditions worsened between them word was sent from Washington to the forts commander, Captain Nathan Heald to make the necessary preparations to abandoned the fort.
Word had leaked out that the fort would be abandoned and the hostile Potawatomis' saw a perfect opportunity to wreak their havoc on the soldiers and their families.
