Nathan Lane (born February 3, 1956 in Jersey City, New Jersey) is a contemporary award-winning American actor of the stage and screen.
His father, Daniel Lane, was a truck driver and an aspiring tenor who died from alcoholism when Lane was 11; his mother, Nora, was a manic-depressive housewife.
Lane himself was forced to retire in December 2004 for the same reason.

Nathan Lane has defended his upcoming NBC sitcom, Encore Encore, against critics who have suggested that the network declined to show them a pilot and has instituted numerous plot and cast changes because they were unhappy with how the original episode turned out.
Nathan Lane Birdcage, The (1996) has signed a deal to star in a TV sitcom for Paramount TV and has received a commitment to star in a theatrical film as part of the deal, Daily Variety reported today (Friday).

Nathan: The story is that my real name is Joseph Lane and that when I joined Actors Equity there was already a Joe Lane and so they said you have to change your name, and you can change your last name or your first name which was traumatic at the time.
Nathan: You know, it would have to be some great script and they said would you like to be in it and here's a great piece of writing, but, no, I don't have any plans to go back to television.

Born Joe Lane in Jersey City, New Jersey, Nathan Lane took his stage name from Nathan Detroit, the character he played to great acclaim in the 1992 Broadway version of Guys and Dolls.
Lane made his film debut in 1987's Ironweed, and he spent the rest of the 1980s and early 1990s playing supporting roles in films such as Joe vs. the Volcano (1990), Frankie and Johnny (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993).
The film helped to establish Lane as a comic actor worthy of big-screen exposure, and in 1997 he was given his own vehicle to display his talents, Mouse Hunt.
