SIMEON BORDEN, for thirty-two years the clerk of the courts of Bristol county, was born March 29, 1829, in Fall River, Mass., where he spent his entire life.
Nathaniel Briggs Borden was born in Freetown (afterward Fall River), Mass., April 15, 1801.
Simeon Borden (6), father of Nathaniel B., was born in Freetown in 1759, removed to Tiverton, R. L, in 1806, and died there November 27, 1811.

The Bordens owned the water rights to the section of the Quequechan river that was in Massachusetts The family originally came to Portsmouth, RI and some descendents migrated to the Falls River in what is now Fall River.
The seven prominent mill owning families were: the Bordens, the Durfees, the Braytons, the Davols, the Slades, the Osborns and the Chaces.
The bankruptcies and defalcations (read, embezzlements) in the Borden and Durfee families in the late 1870s shifted the balance of power to the Brayton family.

Performed at the opening of the Mexico-Puebla railway on 16th November 1869, this piece is described in the New Grove Dictionary of Music as 'an early attempt at an orchestral interpretation of the sound of a locomotive'.
Probably written in 1921-23, Ives' piano piece is a tone poem based on the story of the same title by Nathaniel Hawthorne, dating from 1843.
