Although Hone was a relatively successful portrait painter in oils, he was burdened by an overpowering jealousy for Joshua Reynolds and had numerous rifts with the Academy.
Although Hone was primarily a portrait painter, he is especially remembered for one large subject painting, the Pictorial Conjuror, Displaying the Whole Art of Optical Deception (1775; Dublin, N.G.), a work that caused considerable controversy as it was a clever and detailed attack on Reynolds, the first PRA.
Hone was forced to paint over one section of the painting, but the picture was nevertheless rejected for exhibition at the Academy; his oil sketch (London, Tate) records its original appearance.
