	Nathaniel Shilkret Biography - famous Nathaniel Shilkret Classical collection and Nathaniel Shilkret Music Reviews.
		For many years Shilkret's most prominent association was with the Victor Talking Machine Company (later RCA Victor), where, as "director of light music," he conducted numerous recordings with his Victor Salon Orchestra and other ensembles.
		Shilkret conducted for thousands of network radio broadcasts during those years, and recorded for many labels, such as Brunswick, Columbia, Edison, and Okeh.
		Shilkret conducted the 1927 electrical recording of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue (credited to Paul Whiteman); and he was selected to conduct the initial broadcast and recording of Gershwin's An American in Paris—which he also directed at the 1937 Gershwin Memorial Concert in Los Angeles.

		Nathaniel Shilkret was born Naftule Schüldkraut, December 25, 1899, in Queens, New York.
		Six years later, in 1902, the orchestra advertised Shilkret as a 9-year old, "clarinet phenomenon," though he was, in fact, three years older, at the time.
		Two years later, in January 1929, Shilkret was asked to direct the radio premiere of Gershwin's "An American In Paris." Eight years after that, he conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic, during a memorial broadcast of the same work.

		Whiteman was not a fan of the Victor Orchestra, because Shilkret was recording a lot of the same songs as Whiteman's boys, often upstaging the "King of Jazz" with a better cut.
		Shilkret remained as music director with RCA Victor for only a couple more years, before turning his attention to radio.
		Shilkret then went on to work at Paramount (ONE THIRD OF A NATION, 1939), Columbia (YANKEE DOODLE HOME, 1939) and MGM, where he worked primarily on short subjects for most of the rest of his career.

		The new CD, entitled Christian Lindberg Plays Nathaniel Shilkret is available on BIS records and includes the Swedish composer/trombonist's own works as well as others: Fredrik Högberg's Concerto No.1 for Trombone and Orchestra -- also known as The Return of Kit Bones (2001) -- and Lindberg's own composition Helikon Wasp (2003).
		Shilkret's trombone concerto is something of a Holy Grail for trombone players.
		The score disappeared, as did the orchestral parts, and in the end it took more than 60 years before the piece was ever performed again in its original form.

		Franklyn Baur and Nathaniel Shilkret were arguably more popular in the electric era but each began recording in the acoustic era, Shilkret being especially busy as the leader of orchestras that made records for the Victor Talking Machine Company's foreign and ethnic market.
		Both Baur and Shilkret were active in studios when companies changed from acoustic to electric recording, and their observations about that transition are interesting.
		In an interview for the September 1927 issue of Phonograph Monthly Review, Baur discussed the different demands made on singers by the two recording processes: "The invention of the electrical process was of greater significance than the average layman realizes.

		Comments from other reviews notwithstanding, the audio engineering satisfactorily allows the listener to hear and enjoy music recorded nearly eighty years ago.
		Musically this is a fine issue of its kind but soundwise it's a mixed bag.
