Topic: Nathaniel Ward

  Nathaniel Ward
His father was John Ward, a famous Puritan minister, who, according to a mural tablet that was placed by his sons in the chancel of the church at Haverhill, England, preached the gospel in Haverhill and Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, for twenty-five years.
Nathaniel Ward had two brothers, who like himself, were authors and clergymen, and who also suffered for non-conformity.
Ward was one of the chief Puritan ministers in that county, and in 1631 was brought before Laud, who was then bishop of London, for non-conformity, but escaped excommunication.

In 1629 Ward, who was firmly Puritan in outlook, was installed as rector of the parish of Stondon Massey in Essex, being sponsored by Sir Nathaniel Rich, a man well known for his encouragement of settlement in New England.
Ward wanted them to live next to each other, and since no space was available in Ipswich, he was instrumental in founding the settlement of Haverhill in 1641.
Ward was asked by Parliament to preach before them, but his sermon of June 1647, in which he upheld Parliament's authority against the army but also criticized its failure to control the army, was too controversial to be published officially.

And the difficulty between Nathaniel Ward and the age he lived in, arose from the not uncommon fact that he shrank from the consequences of his own ideas.
Yet Nathaniel Ward shrank from extreme democratic conclusions; and while he was willing to fight against the king in the wrong, he preferred to fight for him in the right.
Besides, Nathaniel Ward had courage of opinion, an unabashed enthusiasm for ideas—his own ideas, frankness, disdain of lisping, finical, and ambiguous utterance, a hearty and high-spirited mirth born of a good conscience and a good digestion, a force of imagination that occasionally uttered itself in a rough but virile and genuine eloquence.
