WHEELER, Nathaniel, inventor, born in Watertown, Connecticut, 7 September, 1820.
Wheeler to join in that enterprise, and in 1852 the machine was patented in the firm-name of Wheeler and Wilson.
Wheeler's knowledge of machinery and his ability as an organizer enabled him to expand the sewing-machine manufacture from the little factory that could make but one machine a day to an establishment that has facilities for producing 600 machines a day.

Nathaniel Wheeler was the founder and executive of many companies in Bridgeport, CT in the 1800's.
He owned numurous manufacturing companies and land all over, around Bridgeport, Ct including the site of his mansion on Golden Hill Street, presently occupied by the City Hall after his long time mansion was pulled down in the 1950s.
One of the larger companies was Wheeler and Wilson, mfg of sewing machines sold throughout the world and later Singer Sewing Machines.

This Nathaniel Potter might have been the planemaker but there is no way to establish that fact because no other information of relevance about him has been uncovered.
This Nathaniel Potter whom I believe to be "the Planemaker" was born in 1693 in Lynn, Massachusetts (Essex County).
Young Nathaniel was training to be house carpenter, not a cabinet maker, and his 'apprenticeship' was more likely to have been informal and conducted by his father.

Nathaniel Wheeler’s connections are the most interesting and it is not difficult to see how he came to be playing a leading role in the Dighton enterprise — they lead directly back to the original factory at Pawtucket.
It was from Wilkinson that Nathaniel Wheeler, his brother Russell and his nephew Dexter acquired their knowledge of the industry (Lane, 1962 p 186) and by 1806 they were engaged in the construction of a cotton mill in Swansea before moving their attention to the Three Mile River.
Nathaniel and Dexter Wheeler and Oliver Chace went on to become pioneers of the cotton industry in Fall River which was ultimately the most successful in Bristol County (Borden, 1899 pp 560-564).
