NASA also administers the space shuttle program and a variety of other endeavors, which include improving the performance of airplanes and rockets (aeronautics), conducting scientific experiments in space, improving data-tracking technology, increasing international alliances for space activities, and establishing partnerships between private companies and government agencies in the aeronautics industry.
NASA grew out of what became known as the “space race” between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) to create a rocket that could reach space and, ultimately, the Moon and perhaps Mars.
These facilities include the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Merritt Island, Florida; the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas; the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland; and the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

 Aeronautics and Astronautics Chronology, 1958
A National Aeronautics and Space Board, appointed by the President and composed of eminent persons outside the Government and representatives of interested Government agencies (with at least one member from the Department of Defense), was to assist the President and the Director of the National Aeronautics and Space Agency.
A NASA Space Task Group organized at Langley Research Center drew up specifications for the Mercury capsule, based on studies by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics during the preceding 12 months, and on discussions with the Air Force which had been conducting related studies.
