 Encyclopedia: Scottish National Party
The party was founded in 1934 as the result of a merger between the National Party of Scotland (NPS) and the Scottish Party.
This became the party's initial position on the constitutional status of Scotland as a result of a compromise between the NPS, who did support independence, and the Scottish Party who were devolutionists.
John MacCormick wanted a merger between the two parties and knew that it would only be through the support of devolution rather than independence that the Scottish Party would be persuaded to merge.

David Cobb, the unsuccessful Green Party presidential candidate, aired startling allegations at the Democratic House Judiciary Committee’s Columbus hearings Monday, alleging that a voting company representative tampered with voting equipment in Columbus last Friday and attempted to plant false information into the Ohio recount.
Ohio election law requires that Democrats, Republicans, and all other parties receive formal notice of the recount, so the election won't start for at least five days and can start as late as ten days from now.
The Glibs formally requested a recount, which will also be slow-walked by Blackwell and the county election supervisors, in order to get past the Electoral College meeting on December 13.

Contemporary Review: The unbreakable mould? British third-party politics since 1924
In the third phase of third party revival, I would argue that the Liberal Democrats neither present a radical alternative to Labour (even to New Labour), nor are they a centre party trying to rein in two extremes, as was the case in the 1970s and 80s.
After a period of coalition government in the 1930s and 1940s, the third party's attack on the ruling duopoly was renewed in the 1950s.
The British electorate in the 1980s arguably did perceive both the main parties as unacceptably extreme, but in the end they felt as though they had to vote for the extreme they disliked least, rather than for the 'moderate' alternative.

The National Religious Party, by contrast, was founded in 1956 specifically to apply spiritual values to governing a modern nation-state.
They agreed that the era of religious political parties in Israel was coming to a close, that mixing politics and Judaism had been detrimental to civil society, and that an alternative way had to be found to instill Jewish cultural values into the body politic.
Ironically, the one religious party whose agenda had a society-wide reach then allowed a narrow issue – support for the settlement movement – to overshadow its spiritual goals.

This alternative to primaries are caucuses, which are, in effect, local party meetings to select delegates to attend county and then state conventions.
But when it comes to selecting delegates to the national political conventions in 2000, both the Democrats and Republicans have national party rules that bar such open primaries.
If California were to go this route (and it's really the only thing they can do if they don't change their open-primary law), the state's delegate-selection process would climax at state party conventions where delegates to the Democratic and Republican national conventions would be chosen.

It did not originate in Fiji but has a long tradition; in British constitutional theory, the Leader of the Opposition must pose a formal alternative to the government, ready to form a government himself should the Prime Minister lose the confidence of the House of Representatives.
Until he reversed his position late in 2004 (following the collapse of negotiations with Prime Minister Qarase, this has forced the President to appoint Millis Beddoes, the sole parliamentary representative of the United General Party, as Leader of the Opposition.
The appointment is not at the president's personal discretion, however, as he is required by the Constitution to appoint the person most acceptable to the majority of the Opposition (defined as members of the House of Representatives who belong to political parties not represented in the Cabinet).
