The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is a research institution located in Boulder, Colorado, operated by the nonprofit University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) under sponsorship of the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Research at NCAR includes studies of atmospheric dynamics (on all scales), climate science, cloud physics, atmospheric chemistry and radiation, turbulence, upper-atmosphere physics (including ionosphere studies and aeronomy), solar physics, oceanography, and societal impacts related to these scientific areas.
Most fellows develop research projects in collaboration with NCAR scientists, but all are expected to choose their own research directions and are responsible for the design and conduct of their own projects.

Spring 2003 Center for History of Physics Newsletter
Conceived during the Cold War and created on the heels of the International Geophysical Year, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) began work in 1960 under contract to the National Science Foundation.
Using a model common among federally-funded research and development centers such as astronomical observatories and high-energy particle accelerators, it has been managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), a consortium of universities that offer Ph.D. programs in the atmospheric sciences.
The initial permanent scientific staff was small, and most research was aggregated under the aegis of a single division, the “Laboratory for Atmospheric Science.&; Today NCAR boasts several scientific divisions for research in atmospheric chemistry, climate and global dynamics, mesoscale and microscale meteorology, aircraft hazards mitigation, solar physics and societal impacts.
