National Climatic Data Center - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The four World Centers (US, Russia, Japan and China) have created a free and open atmosphere in which data and dialogue are exchanged.
NCDC archives 99 percent of all NOAA data, including over 320 million paper records; 2.5 million microfiche records; over 1.2 petabytes of digital data residing in a mass storage environment.
The Center provides historical perspectives on climate which are vital to studies on global climate change, the greenhouse effect, and other environmental issues.

Micrographic Data Rescue at the National Climatic Data Center
The historical data on 16mm and 35mm film was not migrated to a newer media at that time since it was still considered to be a stable media.
The data will be saved upon 3590 cartridge media which is expected to become a NOAA standard as opposed to optical which has no industry standards for the hardware or media.
Based upon information and test results collected by NCDC over the last year from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National Media Lab, and the Image Permanence Institute, NCDC's vast acetate film collection is in an advanced state of deterioration with less than three years of remaining useful life.

Testimony by Thomas R. Karl, Co-chair, NOAA National Climatic Data Center and other witnesses before hearing of the US Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee on climate variability and change, July 18, 2000
This synthesis obviously needed to build on the work that had begun to emerge from the subsequent regional and national studies, but also to draw on the existing scientific literature and analyses done with the most up-to-date ecological and hydrological models and data that could be obtained.
Climate change and the resulting rise in sea level are likely to exacerbate threats to buildings, roads, power lines, and other infrastructure in climatically sensitive places, such as low-lying coastlines and the permafrost regions of Alaska.
In addition to these kind of "bottom-up" efforts, it was decided that it was also necessary to create a national-level synthesis of what is known about the potential for climate impacts for the US as a whole, addressing the issues identified in the regional workshops and national studies.
