 The Miners Strike
The strike, caused by then Chairman of the British Coal Board, Ian Macgregor, after announcing the closure of 20 pits which were deemed uneconomic, with the loss of 20,000 jobs, brought a substantial proportion of the 187,000 miners throughout the UK on strike.
In an effort to prevent coal being imported through Wivenhoe Port, miners from Kent picketed the port operation and this became a regular feature in Wivenhoe, and widely reported in national newspapers as well as television.

As a result of their tenacious fight, in July 2004, the National Labor Relations Board brokered a deal between the company and the union forcing C.W. Mining to offer all of the fired miners their jobs back.
This year’s commemoration featured the unveiling of the restored Ludlow monument dedicated to 20 coal miners and their families killed by the Colorado National Guard and coal company thugs on April 20, 1914.
The more than 70 people who attended that meeting discussed the ongoing struggle to preserve monuments to labor history in the United States and efforts to have the Ludlow site designated as a national historic landmark.

At national level, still extant in spite of the "derecognition" of the NUM in 1986, is the National Concessionary Fuel Agreement for Mineworkers, Cokeworkers and their Beneficiaries dated 29 November 1983 made between the British Coal Board and the NUM.
The National Union of Mineworkers (the NUM) submitted an application to the CAC dated 19 December 2000 that it should be recognised for collective bargaining by RJB Mining (UK) Limited (the Employer) and its subsidiary companies in respect of the national coal industry.
The formal recognition agreement was never concluded and the NUM and the Employer entered into lengthy correspondence with each other over whether the NUM were recognised at national level for the purposes of collective bargaining: the NUM asserting that it was and the Employer that it was not.

“For years, some of these miners have been forced to pay dues to a company dominated ‘union’ that most of them did not know about until it surfaced during the current labor dispute,” said Mike Dalpiaz, UMWA International Executive Board member from Price, Utah, who is quoted in the union’s press release.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union in the Seattle area is organizing a labor tour for the striking miners in the Pacific Northwest in early June.
The letter also sent the NUM greetings on the 20th anniversary of its 1984-85 strike, which was celebrated across many coal towns in the United Kingdom.

 SpinWatch - Secret papers reveal Falconer role in breaking up NUM
Labour's current lord chancellor, Charles Falconer, provided vital legal advice at the height of the miners' strike 20 years ago to enable the Thatcher government and the National Coal Board to assist the breakup of the National Union of Mineworkers, according to previously secret documents released to the Guardian.
Lord Falconer was engaged in his then role as a barrister to advise Sir Ian MacGregor, brought in to run the coal board, on how to handle miners who defied their union leader, Arthur Scargill.
Yesterday a spokesman for Lord Falconer confirmed that he had acted for the NCB, but pointed out that at the time the coal board felt they should be able to enter collective bargaining agreements with groups who wanted to negotiate with them, particularly because a majority of the Nottinghamshire miners had effectively left the NUM.

The coal company provided much of the funding for the schools, but built by the Cambria Township School Board.
According to the Sesquicentennial Cambria County history published by the Cambria County Historical Society, the first coal was shipped in October 1911, however the Cambria Freeman indicated the first coal was shipped in August, 1911.
Colver was designated a National Historic District in June of 1994 under the auspices of America's Industrial Heritage Project of the U. National Parks Service.
