The National People's Congress (全国人民代表大会 in Pinyin: Quánguó Rénmín Dàibiǎo Dàhuì, literally "Pan-Nation Congress of the People's Representatives"), abbreviated NPC (人大, Pinyin Réndà), is the highest legislative body in the People's Republic of China.
A similar term is "National Congress", which is a less common translation of People's Political Consultative Conference.
Delegates are formally elected by the provincial people's congresses for a term of five years.

In 1991, at the first national conference of the ANC held inside South Africa after being banned for decades, Nelson Mandela was elected President of the ANC while his lifelong friend and colleague, Oliver Tambo, became the organisation's National Chairperson.
Their chief contention was that the political tactics of the old guard' leadership of the ANC, reared in the tradition of constitutionalism and polite petitioning of the government of the day, were proving inadequate to the tasks of national emancipation.
