Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is protected on the west side by the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is 197,000 acre area managed by the Bureau of Land Management, and protected as a National Conservation Area.
The canyon is one of the easternmost parts of the Mojave Desert; the bottom of the canyon, from 3,600 to 4,500 ft (1,100 to 1,400 m), is in the Lower Sonoran Zone, while the area from 4,500 ft (1,400 m) up is in the Upper Sonoran Zone.

Sloan Canyon is the newest addition to the National Landscape Conservation System--26 million acres of Bureau of Land Management lands protected for their spectacular environment and historical and cultural sites.
Sloan Canyon NCA was designated just two years ago by Congress to protect unique petroglyph sites, rugged canyons, and one of the few remaining wild places left near a rapidly growing metropolitan area.
Since all of the flights to the Grand Canyon travel east, a heliport on the east side of the valley makes more sense than the southern proposal that would disrupt the wilds of Sloan Canyon.

On one side of the canyon, a ground-level rock depicts a sheep and another symbol, while on the opposite side of the canyon another ground-level rock depicts a birdlike animal and a similar symbol.
Petroglyphs and red-inked pictographs lace the canyon walls and are particularly dense in mid-canyon.

The National Trust for Historic Places, a nonprofit group that works to preserve places and buildings of historic interest, included the National Landscape Conservation System in its annual list of 11 "most endangered historic places." The goal of the listing is to focus attention and potentially financial resources on the threatened places.
Susan Potts, Southern Nevada conservation director for the Friends of Nevada Wilderness, said another weakness of the 1998 act is that unless specified in other laws, proceeds from land sales cannot go to operations and maintenance, the "boots on the ground" that are important to protect the BLM's sensitive areas.
Representatives of the national trust group said the inclusion of the National Landscape Conservation System was unusual in that it included many different sites, but was warranted because of concern about BLM properties.
