BBC - Crime Fighters - National Crime Squad
The National Crime Squad was launched in April 1998 through the amalgamation of the six former regional crime squads.
In the same month, the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 was published and made the National Crime Squad a non-departmental public body, which means it operates independently of government ministers, despite the Home Office remaining responsible for their work.
In April 2001, the National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) was launched as part of the NCS, and became the UK's first national law enforcement organisation tasked to combat serious and organised cyber crime of a national or international nature.

Blackburn and District Blind Society. Brailled Police Identification Cards.
The National Crime Squad is a specialist law enforcement agency and we are well aware that many members of the public may not know exactly who we are or what we do.
The new identification, which will be placed within warrant card holders, is aimed to help identify Crime Squad personnel to people who are either blind or visually impaired, and to provide reassurance to those who may otherwise be unable to check such credentials.
"On the very rare occasions when a Crime Squad officer may be executing a warrant at an address or simply door-knocking, we want to ensure everything possible is done to give visually impaired people access to information and that they are confident that the people they are talking to are who they say they are".

 totse.com CIA Death Squad Timeline
Death squads have originated from the Treasury Police and the National Guard and police.
Squads modus operandi included weeks of surveillance of suspects followed by capture by disguised agents using vehicles with stolen license plates, interrogation, torture in secret jails followed by execution and secret burial.
Crimes are merely examples of a vast, systematic pattern; [the guilty] are only cogs in a large U.S. government apparatus.

HM Inspectorate of Constabulary: A Report of Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary: Scottish Crime Squad 1999: Page 8
The Commander of the Squad, unlike the Director General of the National Crime Squad for England and Wales who holds the rank equivalent of Chief Constable, is unable to authorise operations directly and requires to seek this through individual Chief Constables.
In June 1998 the joint operation between the Scottish and National Crime Squads, HM Customs and Excise and NCIS, was brought to a successful conclusion with the arrest of three persons in Spain and the recovery of 240 kilograms of Cannabis Resin.
Whilst recognising that chief constables will have their own thoughts as to what should be included HMIC suggests that there may be value in examining work currently being undertaken by the National Crime Squad of England and Wales and a thematic inspection report on police integrity recently published by HMIC for England and Wales.

 Police
Although the Ministry of Defense Police, Atomic Energy Authority Constabulary and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (aka Royal Ulster Constabulary) are issued firearms as a matter of routine, as are the many detectives of CID and Special Branch and plainclothes constables of the Flying Squad and the National Crime Squad.
Specialised groups exist within the branches either for dealing with particular types of crime (for instance, traffic policing, murder, or fraud) or because of particular specialised skills they have (for instance, diving, operating helicopters, bomb squad, and so on).
In most Western legal systems, the major role of the police is to discourage and investigate crimes, and if able to apprehend suspected perpetrator(s), to detain them, and inform the appropriate authorities.

Four Corners - 15/03/2004: Speed Trap
Those recommendations were changes to work practices of the Drug Squad, issues to do with industrial agreements the Chief Commissioner herself would recognise that she has to comply with as the employer.
MICK PRITCHARD: It's my belief, fully, that the Drug Squad turned the camera off, broke into the shed, removed the drugs and left a gaping hole in the side of the shed and left and the surveillance camera was switched on immediately after it was broken into.
The hunters of the Drug Squad chose their quarry well enough, but too often, the intended prey avoided the trap, and escaped with the bait.
