ASHP News: VA Pursues Bar-Code Quality
Bar codes are "part of the drug's label," according to FDA and therefore are subject to the same good manufacturing practices (GMP) the agency requires for other components of a product's label.
"If an individual encounters a problem scanning the bar code, and the problem is due to the bar code's quality, then such scanning problems can be reported to FDA through the Drug Quality Reporting System," the final rule states.
If a bar code is unreadable by a scanner, said Russ Carlson, nursing consultant and project manager for the bar-code quality project at the National BCMA Joint Program Office, the other components of a health system's bar-code system "aren't going to be effective."

 US FDA/CFSAN FDA Food Code
The U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) publishes the Food Code, a model that assists food control jurisdictions at all levels of government by providing them with a scientifically sound technical and legal basis for regulating the retail and food service segment of the industry (restaurants and grocery stores and institutions such as nursing homes).
Local, state, tribal, and federal regulators use the FDA Food Code as a model to develop or update their own food safety rules and to be consistent with national food regulatory policy.
The Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) reported in June 2005, that 48 of 56 States and territories have adopted food codes patterned after one of the five versions of the Food Code, beginning with the 1993 edition.

'420' Slang for Marijuana Going Mainstream JoinTogether.org
The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) may help bring the underground term "420," the international code word for smoking marijuana, into the mainstream, USA Today reported Jan. 29
Some believe 420 got its origins as a police radio code for "pot smoking in progress." But Steven Hager, editor of High Times, said its reference goes back to 1971, when a group of high-school students in California met frequently at 4:20 to smoke.
"It is now known universally around the world by people in the drug culture," Hager noted.

April 20 at 4:20 PM is the “pot-smokers’ holiday,” also variously described as the “hippie New Year,” “national smoke time,” “national pot-smoking day,” “the holiday,” “pot appreciation day,” “the ultimate session,” or “a day of tribute to the scene.” One enthusiastic smoker reported: “Every group has its holidays, and pot-smokers are no exception.
The answering officer explained that 420 in the “penal book” referred to “preventing or obstructing entry upon or passage upon public lands.” I then asked what the code would be for marijuana-smoking in progress.
I think this is the most valid expression of 420, as it puts the recreational use of marijuana in full view of the public, which is perhaps the first step towards gaining legitimacy.” Others explained: “4/20 at 4:20 is a time to come together.

 Police - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch
Police organizations also must sometimes deal with the issue of police corruption which is often abetted by a code of silence that encourages unquestioning loyalty to one's comrades over the cause of justice.
Federal police fall into two broad categories: investigative agencies (such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Marshals Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the United States Secret Service); and uniformed security police agencies (such as the Federal Protective Service, U.S. Mint Police, United States Park Police and United States Border Patrol).
Police sometimes involve themselves in the maintenance of public order, even where no legal transgressions have occurred -- for example, in some Australia n jurisdictions, people who are drunk and causing a public nuisance may be removed to a "drying-out centre" until they recover from the effects of the alcohol.
