NEDRA guys Rich Rudman and Shawn Lawless were on Monster Garage this past April 10 as part of Jesse James crew to build an electric powered drag car from a 1962 Chevy Bel Air.
In addition to the drag race on Friday night there was a Show and Shine and autocross event on Saturday.

The Killa-Cycle, driven by Kerry Hogan and owned by Bill Dube, completed a quarter-mile race in 10.539 seconds on March 18th at Speedworld Motorplex, a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) member track located in Phoenix, AZ.

Drag racing was organised as a sport by Wally Parks in the early 1950s through the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) which is the largest sanctioning motor sports body in the world.
In drag racing, the objective is to complete a certain distance, traditionally 1/4 mile, (400 m), in the shortest possible time.
The first auto race in the United States, over a 54.36 mile (87.48 km) course, took place in Chicago, Illinois on November 2, 1895, Frank Duryea winning in 10 h and 23 min, beating three petrol-fuelled cars and two electric.

I hit the button and at first, the contactors snapped in and there was that huge power blast with a big screech of the tires and the slam into the seat...then, a half second later, the power went limp...then, they re-connected again for a second screech and seat slam...then, the car accelerated 'OK'...
John's car, the "White Zombie", is a 1972 Datsun 1200 powered by dual 8" Warfield motors for 200+ HP, 20 12-volt Exide batteries and a 1400 amp Godzilla controller.
The plan was to connect, then disconnect the DC-DC as described, so that during pit charging time, the pack could be equalized a bit to make up for the slight offset in discharge of half the pack.

Roger built an electric rail dragster back in 1973 which he drag raced at Sacramento Speedway and also Fremont Raceway which are both long gone.
When Roger took his car to Bonneville in 1974 he established a new land speed record for electric cars of 175.061 MPH which held for over two decades until EV legends Lloyd Healy and Ed Rannberg came along.
He drag raced "The Battery Box" for testing purposes in prepartion for a run at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Five NEDRA records were broken including one by the Great Mills High School Green Hornet, a converted 252 volt Toyota MR2 built by students from Calvert County Maryland.
Covering all the excitement was NBC TV in Hagerstown and the Discovery Channel from Canada which will air the event in September on the Daily Planet.
