 National Endowment for the Humanities Programs and Information
Provides opportunities for teachers in five-, four-, and two-year colleges; for scholars employed in libraries, museums, historical associations, and other humanities institutions; and for independent scholars to work during the summer in their areas of interest under the direction of distinguished scholars at institutions with library resources suitable for advanced study and research.
In connection with this program, the Endowment is offering support for projects in the area of the Emergence of Democracy, a special NEH initiative.
Applicants must be teachers who: are employed full-time in elementary, middle, or high schools, with at least half their schedule in the humanities; are in their fifth year of full-time teaching and plan to teach the humanities at least five more years; and have not previously been awarded an ISH Fellowship.

Humanities councils were created by Congress in the early 1970s and receive an annual congressional appropriations through the National Endowment for the Humanities, which for most councils is supplemented by state and private funding.
This interest in organizational development was also evident during his seven years as a program officer for the Arkansas Humanities Council, where his particular contribution was to help build the capacities of partners in state government, in higher education and at the community level to develop and deliver humanities programming.

Research projects in the humanities or social sciences on subjects such as the modern Japanese political economy, international relations and society, and US-Japan relations are eligible for joint support from NEH and the Japan-United States Friendship Commission through the Advanced Social Science Research on Japan Fellowship Program.

The National Endowment for the Humanities is working on the project with the Library of Congress, which has embarked on a broader project to preserve records of American newspapers dating from the late 1600s.
Cole said the National Digital Newspaper Program is to further the founding fathers' belief that knowledge of history was a necessity for government by the people.
The span of the joint project is limited because type faces of printers used before 1836 are too difficult for optical scanners to read, and copyright restrictions are in force on papers published after 1923.
